About Us

The Pacific Islander Festival Association (PIFA) began with a historic welcome. Today, we are a vibrant, year-round organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultures of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. We are more than a festival; we are a community united by a shared heritage and a commitment to future generations.

The Voyage That Sparked a Legacy

In the summer of 1994, a legendary vessel, the Hōkūle’a double-hulled voyaging canoe, journeyed to San Diego. This was more than a visit; it was a powerful demonstration of our ancestors' mastery of wayfinding—navigating the vast Pacific using only the sun, stars, and currents.

To honor this historic event, leaders from the Samoan, Chamorro, Tongan, Hawaiian, Tahitian, and other Pasifika communities united. With the blessing of the Kumeyaay Nation, they organized the first-ever Pacific Islander Festival. For three days, an estimated 60,000 people gathered to celebrate our culture through food, art, and performance.

The arrival of the Hōkūle’a created a wave of mana (spirit) so powerful that our leaders vowed it must continue.

Birth of a Festival

From that single, unforgettable weekend, the Pacific Islander Festival Association (PIFA) was born.

Our annual festival remains the largest celebration of its kind in the United States, but our work extends far beyond it. Today, PIFA is a living, breathing organization active throughout the year. We host local events, workshops, and fundraisers that directly support our three core pillars:

The PIFA Scholarship Program: Investing in the educational journeys of our youth.
The Miss PIFA Leadership Program: Empowering the next generation of cultural ambassadors.
The PIFA Festival: Preserving our heritage and sharing it with the world.
